Therapeutic Qi Gong Pronounced "chee gong" is is a system of subtle exercises that stimulate and balance the Qi life force or energy pathways (acupuncture meridians) in the human body. Qi Gong combines movement, meditation and breathing to promote health and healing. Over 200 million Chinese citizens practice Qi Gong everyday as it promotes awareness and self-empowerment - higher levels of consciousness. In China, "Qi" stands for physical activity or the healthy functioning of the body. The rise of obesity in the West suggests that we have lost sight of the importance of this part of our human ontology. We have lost touch with the importance of body awareness and sensation. Do we know what small movements of the body induce warmth and coolness? When our feet are touched, why do we feel it throughout the body? Why does bad news get us in the pit of our stomach ? This is where the Qi in the body collects - just below the naval. We talk about exercising 'the core' to keep the whole body fit. Sadness, anxiety and stress are signs that our Qi harmony is disturbed. "Gong" means to gain, achieve, perform or succeed. It's about ability and dexterity, things we learn from exercising the body as well as the mind. Dancers, acrobats and self-defence experts focus on promoting and regulating their 'gong'. As a result, Qi Gong is best understood as a set of exercises taking the form of routines such as Tai Chi which is believed to prolong and improve the quality of our lives. In the West, we know that gentle exercise promotes a healthy nervous system, strong muscles and flexible spine and good digestion. The emphasis on balance and harmony recognises the unity of body, mind and soul. When the mind is stressed the body feels burdened we are hit by the physical effects of pain, tiredness and illness. The Qi energy is being sapped form the body physically and emotionally. Qi is replenished by relaxation, a healthy diet, a calm and quiet mind. This enhances the flow of blood and oxygen to stimulate the immune system and both body and mind feel less 'depressed'. An Ontological Coach observes the client's Qi levels and looks for ways of helping the client see that there 'way of being' can be influenced by their Qi getting into balance. The coach can suggest simple exercises, like stretching in bed, to exhale and raise the spine like a cat, breathe slowly, gently and deeply, do pushups and crunch sit-ups, meditate, etc. Somatic Coaches focus on “the living body in its wholeness” as a way of observing people holistically. It is a process in which one embodies new practices to create a healthy, balanced physiology. It is a unique coaching style that makes the body an advocate in creating a place for change and transformation. We can forget that the body is a highly intelligent and authentic expression of “self,” and by reconnecting our body with mind and soul a sense of wholeness and peace can be regenerated. A somatic coach works to literally reshape and rebuild your body by refocusing and reshaping through conversation, body postures and, when possible, bodywork. This interrupts the old pattern so that you are then able to create the passion and energy needed to support you in delievering your life purpose.
